One summer day, my friend Chris and I were walking around Jackson Square looking for some good B-Roll with our production team (the production team consisting of Chris and I. [Yes, sometimes I refer to myself in the third person.]) Singing his guts out in front of an enormous crowd (by street performer standards) was Funny Tombow. We talked with him a while, and asked him if we could do a mini-documentary about his one-man band. He agreed, so we met up with him the next day and learned all about how he started singing for tips after a clown named Perry the Hobo gave him a lecture on free enterprise. Tombow lives in Japan, but he loves blues, so he came back to New Orleans to sing “Johnny B. Goode” (and make some tips!)
